間接疑問文の解説
間接疑問文の解説
間接疑問文は、動詞のあとに入ります。
語順は、疑問詞＋主語＋動詞、です。
Where does she live? とは、語順がまったく変わります。
tell 人 内容、のような目的語を2個とる場合も、間接疑問文の語順は同じです。
間接疑問文と疑問詞＋to do との違い
この２つの文を見てください。
- I don’t know where she is. (私は彼女がどこにいるのか知らない。）
- I don’t know where to go. (私はどこへ行けばいいか知らない。）
１の文の主語は、Iですが、where から後、is の主語は she です。
2の文は、主語もwhere から後の go の主語も、I です。
間接疑問文は、主語が一致している必要はありません。
疑問詞＋to do の主語は、英文全体の主語と同じです。
もう１つ違う点があります。
how to do, where to go, などは、「～するべきか」の意味が含まれています。
I don’t know where I should go. (= I don’t know where to go.)
間接疑問文それ自体には、「should」の意味がありません。
よって、疑問詞＋to do の方が、使われ方が限られています。

間接疑問文と関係代名詞との違い
こちらは、関係代名詞を学習した後に見てください。
- I don’t know a man who is running over there. (私は向こうで走っている男の人を知りません。）
- I don’t know who is running over there. (私は向こうでだれが走っているのか知りません。）
- Can you tell me who is running over there. (向こうでだれが走っているのか私に教えてくれませんか。）
関係代名詞は１の文だけで、２と３は間接疑問文です。
違いは、who の前に 「a man 」があることだけ。
関係代名詞は、who以下が a man という名詞の中身を説明しています。
日本語：（向こうで走っている）男
カッコの部分が a man の修飾語です。
２の文には、who の前には動詞 know があって、名詞はありません。
３の文は、who の前に me がありますが、me など代名詞に関係代名詞がくっつくことはありません。
whoやwhich がくっつくのは、 a man, the book のような具体的でない名詞のあとだけです。
